چکیده

Chlorination-induced changes in the physicochemical characteristics of effluent organic matter (EfOM) and their role fouling hollow fiber polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) microfiltration membranes during wastewater reclamation was mechanistically investigated. Pre-chlorination strongly influenced pressure rise constant flux forward filtration as well hydraulically irreversible by backwashing with low doses exacerbating it high alleviating it. Dose-dependent trends originated from alterations EfOM size polarity consequently its interactions membrane based on whether applied chlorine concentrations were above or below a threshold value. Variations macroscopic phenomena such sorption tendency, streaming potential, initial upon exposure to pre-chlorinated consistent favorable adhesion energies calculated using extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory. Progressive even though XDLVO theory predicted unfavorable EfOM-EfOM cohesive under all chlorination conditions demonstrated that hydrodynamics (permeation drag) dominated later stages fouling. raw largely deposited surface resulting compressible cake filtration. In contrast, pre-chlorination fragmented leading intrapore (standard blocking) at beginning transitioning (intermediate blocking).

Combining Coagulation/MIEX with Biological Activated Carbon Treatment to Control Organic Fouling in the Microfiltration of Secondary Effluent

Coagulation, magnetic ion exchange resin (MIEX) and biological activated carbon (BAC) were examined at lab scale as standalone, and sequential pre-treatments for controlling the organic fouling of a microfiltration membrane by biologically treated secondary effluent (BTSE) using a multi-cycle approach. MIEX gave slightly greater enhancement in flux than coagulation due to greater removal of hig...

Pre-treatment for ultrafiltration: effect of pre-chlorination on membrane fouling

Microbial effects are believed to be a major contributor to membrane fouling in drinking water treatment. Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) is commonly applied in membrane cleaning, but its potential use as a pretreatment for controlling operational fouling has received little attention. In this study, the effect of adding a continuous low dose of NaClO (1 mg/l as active Cl) in combination with alum,...

Combined Three Mechanisms Models for Membrane Fouling during Microfiltration

Five new mathematical triple fouling models were developed to explore the flux decline behavior during the microfiltration. The first model was developed by the assumption of the successive effects of standard mechanism, intermediate pore blockage and cake formation by using the standard blocking flux expression in the model calculations. The second and third models also obtained by the success...

Fouling mechanisms during protein microfiltration: The effects of protein structure and filtration pressure on polypropylene microporous membrane performance

A polypropylene microporous membrane (PPMM) was fabricated by thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method. The effects of protein size and structure as well as filtration pressure on the membrane performance and fouling mechanisms were investigated using two different proteins, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and collagen, in dead-end filtration setup. Obtained results showed that, for each pro...

Mark Wilf Ph. D. and Steven Alt APPLICATION OF LOW FOULING RO MEMBRANE ELEMENTS FOR RECLAMATION OF MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER. Abstract Membrane fouling encountered in reclamation of municipal wastewater

Membrane fouling encountered in reclamation of municipal wastewater represents serious design and operational concern. This is because the municipal effluent, after secondary treatment, contains high concentrations of suspended particles, colloids and high level of biological activity. Application of membrane technology for treatment of municipal wastewater requires very extensive pretreatment ...
